Yeah, huge fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs - period! Especially his Tarzan and John Carter works. Probably his overall best. Can't wait for this JC movie.

Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan and Mars series were some of the first SF I ever read. I loved the Martian series. Hope the movie does it justice.  I still have a lot of those old Ace and Ballantine paperback editions. Some of those were just 45 cents new!

The John Carter series was my favorite series when I was a kid. I am happy that  a movie was made, but doubt that it will live up to my expectations.

Out of the TONS of Tarzan movies and TV series, NONE of them ever captured the brutal and total savergery that Burroughs penned them.

Guiellermo del Toro was supposed to write and direct the first hard rated R Tarzan film, promising to bring the blood and guts, the total savagery that all the others ignored. Shame, but for whatever reason, he hasn't done it.

I am hoping, despite how much Hollywood likes to change the books to the movies, that this John Carter director is gonna capture the Mars overall theme. He states that he has been a huge fan of the franchise since the 70's.

I hope that counts for something. I think it will. And I will see it opening weekend.

Daniel, I remember the great cover art for these Stark books. I also remember trying them because they sounded like great sci-fi pulp adventure that I like.

But I also kinda remember them not being as good as Burroughs or Robert E. Howard. Big shoes to fill, or compare to, I know.

Has anybody read the Stark series here?

I haven't read them either but according to what Mark posted they're a more hardboiled take on John Carter. Since Mark is adapting the stories for a major publisher it's worth a look.

So this new comic book or graphic novel being adapted is for real, not a joke?

Don't why you'd think it was a joke. Mark is a well known and respected comic creator and graphic novel and the Eric John Stark graphic novel is coming out from Dark Horse, a very big publisher.

Mark already adapted Doc Savage, the Wild Wild West and even HP Lovecraft to comics.

It was because I didn't read the entire link. Misinterpreted it.

I didn't even know what 'Mark' you were talking about.

The Brackett Stark novels were very good but lacked the epic feel of the original Burroughs.

    Saw it twice!

Had to see it on IMAX 3D.

I thought it was one of those very rare movies where it was actually better than the classic literary book. Usually Hollywood's adaptations (Like Conan the barbarina!) suck balls.

But, in this case, it was in my humble opinion, better. More updated and exciting. They took the best parts of book 1 and 2, kept them, albeit enhanced them for the better, then added in a tad better storyline ending to today's movie-going standards.

I will wait for the Blu-Ray.

I don't get 3d at all its just an expensive way to watch a blurred film to me.

£13 to see an IMAX film is also beyond my pocket even if it is a bloody big screen (and blurred!!)

    To each his own.

Me? I will gladly pat Imax 3D prices for a sci-fi/fantasy epic, and it interests me.

I don't need to see EVERYTHING in 3D, but stuff like JC or the upcoming Prometheus - yeah!

I have an Astigmatism in my left eye that causes me to not be able to see 3d effects, even with glasses (not the Buddy Holly 3d ones but corecting specs.) on.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astigmatism

In addition having a family means 2 or 3 times the cost per visit to the cinema plus 2 or 3 times the popcorn / drinks bill. A trip out to the IMAX for 3 can cost upwards of £70 with the extras thrown in, or almost £40 for just the tickets alone.

Yeah, its so bloody expensive to go to the cinema nowaday's . What with the ever present threat of "Pirate Film's" you would think they would adjust the price to get "the punters in"

I saw the film both ways. It is fine 2 D. Do yourself a favor and see it.

It really is worth it. If you like the books, this one is actually bigger and better than the 1st 2 books, which I just re-read.

After reading the first 2 books again, I can see how the writers and director changed it a bit for today's audience. It IS, and WAs, for the better, in my humble opinion.

Even though they are considering this a flop, I think word of mouth will, and should, actually turn this movie around. I would love to see a sequel.

    It deserves it.
