So after browsing through the thread about Scarlet Dream, I noticed a comment by someone who said they weren't reading the book because it wasn't in the official canon. That got me wondering.

Why isn't it in the "canon"? And who's canon are we going by, exactly? Are we basing what is canon and non-canon by the fact there's everything Mark has written and everything everyone else has written? I honestly figured the entire series was canon.

OK, canon to those fans who have followed Outlanders from the start is any book written by Mark Ellis, the creator of the series.
Night Eternal is counted as canon as Mark gave guidance to Mel Odom when he was writing it. Mask of the Sphinx for the same reason is also counted as canon.

BUT, its up to you as the new reader to the series. You bought the books with your own hard earned cash, so what YOU want to take as canon is for YOU to decide.

    But WE know best...

That was me who said I didn't consider Scarlet Dream canon...and after reading Baz's masterful skewering of it, my attitude is justified.

My attitude is since Mark didn't leave OL by his own choice (he explains why he isn't writing it now on his new blog) and he had plans for the future of the series that weren't realized, then all non-Mark books are non-canon.

But I recall Mark posting on his own site that he considered Mel Odom's Wreath of Fire and Prodigal Chalice canon, too.

It's Mark's series so he can determine what is canon and what isn't. Other people can decide for themselves.
