With the new's off an upcoming new arrival, I began to wonder what old friend's and or allies the author's could bring back or stumble across for a book or two, like Donfil More(?). I quite liked the Convoy Boss from Cannibal Moon.

Donfil makes an appearance in Downrigger Drift. Every other person who has travelled with the companions ended up dying, so the only recurring characters they ever meet are old enemies and Roberto the Trader (from Pollotta's books).

Trader has been the axis of this series. He might as well be Ryan's father. He was looked upon by Ryan as that, in fact.

I would love to see a return of the Trader. And have the best writer of this series have him go out in a blaze of glory.

A proper end for a legend.

I think toward's the end of his second foray with the one eyed gang, ol trader was fast becoming a pain in there ass and it was getting to the point where Ryan was going to have to put him in his place or more likely his grave.
Also i think most of the fans thought he was a bit of a douchebag. However it would be nice to get some closure on whether he was alive or dead.

I like the idea of Ryan and The Trader runnin into each other after all these yrs.But come on Max,The Trader bein the axis of the DLs books is a stretch.True Ryan looked up to The Trader as a Father, but that was yrs ago.DLs is centered around Ryan and his group, and why not?He is the badest fucker walkin around and he runs with some badass ppl.So if someone does write a DLs book with The Trader gettin the better of Ryan,I'll hunt u down and beat u to death with "Red Holocaust"

I mean that the Trader is the axis because Ryan and J. B. always quote 'Traderisms' in just about every book. Also, he is, or was, a HUGE, bigger-than-life character in the series.

I actually kinda hated when he came back as an asshole. It didn't make sense, because Ryan and him got along for a decade in the war wags. I don't mind the writer creating tension betwixt the two, but I would've rather seen them understand each other, and then have Trader save the companions by somehow blowing up an army of muties, while having to blow himself up in the process.

    Or something akin to that...

Read Pilgrimage to Hell again - Trader was an asshole before he left; he just became even more of one after he returned. It was noted several times that he was different - shorter temper, mood swings, short attention span, memory loss... Trader and Ryan knocking heads was bound to happen - in his day, Trader was the king and Ryan was his right hand. After Trader returned, Ryan was running the show, and Trader was still used to being the guy in charge, so it led to conflicts (and also because both men are strong-willed and unwilling to back down when challenged - it's necessary for a leader-type in DL). In the end, Trader did the honorable thing - he sacrificed himself to hold off the muties and brushwooders so Ryan and the others could get away (see the Shadowfall summary on the wiki).

Trader was a larger-than-life figure, a Deathlands legend, and the one who's largely responsible for Deathlands being what it is today* ("today" being "at the present time in the books ), as well as Ryan being who he is, but he's not the axis of the series... more like the foundation on which it's built.

*Not my opinion; this was noted in one of the books. It is arguably true, though... he supplied arms and equipment to villes looking to rebuild, fought against muties/bandits/warlords, helped propagate news and trade, and gave people hope. There are lots of times when the companions run into people who say "Hey, you ran with Trader? He did for us, and we're so grateful!"

I must have missed it.So let me ask u both Jim and Max, in what books did this happen?I'm not tryin to be an ass about it,I'd just like to know

    Lets see...

    Sarcasm on...

    Book 1 page 23, line 12 word 5
    Book 5 page 123, line 6 word 2
    Book 7 page 54, line 19 word 4

That's just from memory, I will have to re read the rest to find them. Come back in about 6 months and I will have a full list for you

Seriously though, I know I can remember a lot of stuff from the books but in what books and by who a specific word was used is even beyond my planet sized brain.

Why not re read them all again yourself and come back and tell us -sort of like homework but a longer and more interesting project and as an added bonus can you also tell me how many times Dean says "Hot Pipe" and in what books I'd just like to know...

    Sarcasm off...

Throughout the series, everyone refers to the former U.S. of A as Deathlands.  From Japan to Mexico and now we know the Canadians call it Deathlands too.

True, Trader was/is a living legend.  He helped where he saw profit (With a few notable non-profit deals) and dealt justice in lead when someone tried to screw him and his business.

It's obvious that Trader's legacy has mutated (pun intended) into the "Divine Wind" that the companions have been referred to as numerous times.  To my memory, it's usually Doc who says it.  A wind that sweeps across the land, scouring evil from it's face and leaving that portion of Deathlands just that little bit cleaner.

However, being associated with Trader is a double-edged sword for Ryan and companions.  Sure they have been greeted with open arms and food on the table, but more often than not, they are treated with hostility by someone who's cousin's, wife's brother-in-law, either Trader or the companions killed (For "Divine Wind" purposes, lol) and attacked, captured, tortured, etc...

Anyways, I think Deathlands always revolves around the companions because they inherited the legacy of Trader with new twists.  Hence, the Mat-Trans, time-trawling, cryogenics, Sec-Hunter droids...  Magus.

In writing this, I realize that would be the best finale for Trader.  A team-up once again with Ryan and friends for a chase through the Mat-Trans network and a final show-down with Magus.  Trader arming an implode gren and taking Magus along for the ride.  Sounds fun!

I've been considering writing a DL book for a while now and this could be my chance...

Did you seriously want a list of every freakin' time a character said "Deathlands"?

I guess you never saw the sarcasm filter being switched on and off in my post?

Your question was just asking for it, how the hell do you expect anyone to remember all the books where the remains of the USA are referred to as "the Deathalands"?

    Really, where you serious?

Oh and how should a veteran member respond to just such a post, I'm curious to know -just for future reference?

Hey, lets just forget the whole thing. It was a post that I thought would be taken in the humor that was intended, sadly I guess my English sense of humor once more gets me into the poo.

You do have to admit that it was a bit of a silly question to ask though? Perhaps rephrasing it might have been better, something along the lines of "...has Deathlands been mentioned by name in many books, as I can't recall it ever having been?" Thats a more constructive way to pose the same question and one that would have gotten a reply with out the sarcasm filter being applied.

I don't have a problem with you and have had some good conversations here in the past. Sorry to have offended you with my oh so English humor.

I've read every DL book written, I come to this site to get the complete list of books so I can preorder them and I look for others who are williing to review on the books. I don't post often because I don't get the time but I can't resist today. My commpliments to Maximus - you show as a new member but you're obviously a well informed and well written reviewer. British Bloke - that was funny, some people just don't have a sense of humor. Diabo, take a chill pill and enjoy the books like the rest of us. Silent - I love the new characters intruduced in Hells Road Warries as well. OneFallenShadow - WTF are you talking about (no offense) on this "devine wind" theme? Are you saying the Trader has turned into the Holy Spirit or something? Perhaps you could point me to the book, page, and word numbers so I can see where I've been missing out on "Devine Wind?". Sheesh. One more thing....MORE CHUCK ROGERS PLEASE.

Thanks, I'm glad someone else thought it humorous.

On a humour driven sideline...I find it quite amusing that folk have started calling me "Bloke" or "British Bloke"  instead of my forum name )3az )3aziah. Do the ASCII stylised B's at the start confuse people, do they not know how to say it? Maybe they even miss the fact that I sign my posts with -perhaps, my Christian name? None of the above bothers me, call me what you want just so long as its not insulting or defamatory.

    oh yes...

how long has that been there...

Why don't you have something under your name?

Is it because I am special?

Seriously, it used to say "Spelling Bee" as I used to pull everyone for the smallest speling eror in there posts. No, really I did and it used to p!ss folk off so I stopped so Ron changed it to B.B in honour of me being (at the time) the only British bloke here and because I had been around these places since the very first incarnation of the site -when Chris  (Outlanders) ran the show.

Baz Baziah is a Talmudic Angel of health and healing.

OK ,to answer your next question, what is "Talmudic"?

The Talmud is a central text of mainstream Judaism. It takes the form of a record of discussions pertaining to Jewish Law, philosophy, customs and history.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talmud

And your next question, Am I Jewish?

No. But I am English and some folk believe that the English are the lost tribe of Israel...

Because as he said in his post the name "Baz B" come's from the Talmud which is the Jewish Holy Book, so one might put two and two together and get 4 by 2 (Cockney Rhyming Slang)

OHHHH, hey )3az )3aziah.  Remember me? I always wondered what your name meant, thank you.  Also, I have two quick questions for you. The first is what is your favorite Deathlands book? My favorite is Bloodlines.  Also, do you remember that in Chill Factor that Ryan CHEATED on Krysty with Kate? I believe she was a slave from those camps that Zimyanin ran. I always found that wild that he was unfaithful one time( that I can remember.) Sorry if this is not the correct post for such questions, I have not been here in a while and I still was not use to the way that Mr. Ron Miles and you( I find the two of you along with Jax 2 , I am assuming Mr. Mark Ellis, and Mr. Alan Philipson) to "run" the site and as a die hard Deathlands fan, I appreciate your individual efforts to keep this cool site going. If I have a random question about Deathlands where do I go to post( ex. What is your favorite villian?) P.s. When I first use to post I was an a**hole and I just would to apologize for my behavior, hey we ALL have a different opinion, right?  Thank You.

Harry, as Silentalbino has already said I made reference to my name being from one of the Hebrew holy books and preempted the questions that I thought might follow.

Silentalbino also used several terms used by the people born in London here in England (the Capital city) called rhyming slang where words or phrases that rhyme with the names of things are used place of them.

Cockney is the name given to people born in London -well to be a true Cockney you have to be born within the sound of the bells inside St. Mary-le-Bow's church

    Brilliant Harry!

I think you're getting closer to your ultimate goal of having  a post with absolutely no correctly spelled words!

    Good show!

My favourite book? I don't think I have an all out favourite but the ones I really do like are Dectra Chain, Cold Asylum and Bloodlines. Mars arena is also up there with the best of them.

I think in Chill factor Ryan believed he was not going to get back "home" again and that is why he did what he did? I could be wrong as its quite some time since I read any of the real old time DL books.

I think this forum is the ideal place to post questions and I'm sure just as long as they are not silly ones like "how many times has Dean Said "hot pipe" in book 44?", you will get an answer here.

I don't run the site, its all a one man show done by Ron. He puts a lot of time, effort and his own money into making this site what it is.

    Jim

Darkraven: Ryan has never cheated on Krysty. He was raped once by a huge female stickie in Moon Fate, but he and Kate never got it on. She wanted to, but he shot her down.
