I am sure all true Death Lands fans thought that the Sci Fi Channel's movie adaption of "Homeward Bound" was a complete disaster on too many levels to list.) Vincent Spano as Ryan?hahahahah! That was probably the least bad thing about it!
My hope is that it has not ruined the chance for a Death Lands feature film.

Since the 1990 Dolph Lundgren "Punisher" did not stop Marvel entertainment from making 2 more Punisher movies in 2004 and 2008,there seems like there should be hope for another crack at Death Lands with a real budget/cast/and a decent director.

In my opinion I think Death Lands requires a bit of cgi effects/blue screen like "300" and since Zak Snyder directed that, the "Dawn of The Dead "remake/and "Watch Men" he would bring alot to the film.
(300 is my fav movie and Zak is my fav director.lol)

Cast:I think Hugh Jackman(w/eye patch of course) would be a phenominal Ryan Cawdor!
He has proven he can play a baddass already w/his "Wolverine/X-Men" roles.
He also has the right height/build/hair color etc..and a blue contact lense fixes his brown eye.
As far as Jak,J.B.,Mildred.Krysty,and Doc Tanner?
I have no idea, perhaps it would be good to use "unknowns".
I do think that Anthony Hopkins would be a great Doc Tanner!
I would love to discuss this w/anyone interested and find out who they think the actors should be?/what book?a series?a movie?

Maybe a Comic book or graphic novel would be a better forum?
Another series(vampire fiction) that I love has become a very hot selling series of comic books after a 10 year to present run as a New York times bestseller.
    All friendly discussion/replies are welcome!
    Thanks,
    Chris

i need to give this some thought as to who i think would play well..Hugh J for Ryan could definately work...but do you see him taking a role that not many people know about? Krysty would have to be someone special...like Jessica Biel with a hair color change....now that would be damm hot!

    Yeah,you have a point man.

Hugh Jackman might be too "big" a star, but if it had a decent budget and a well known director? Why not?

Ryan Cawdor kinda reminds me of Kurt Russells' Character "Snake Plisken" in "Escape From New York"Kurt Russell would have been perfect but he is too old now.

    I agree about Jessica Biehl,SMOKIN!!!

It would probably work best if the characters were unknowns, kinda like how Brandon Routh played the new Super Man?
All I know is I have been wanting to see Death Lands on the screen for 17 years and instead I was destroyed with that sci-fi-channel "Homeward Bound",with that douchebag Vincent Spano trying to play Ryan.Hell,I could make a more convincing Cawdor and Im a pussy compated to that character!lol.

Okay I figure I should weigh in on this one, great topic!!!  For Ryan, yeah if they could get him Hugh would be fantastic, if they could get him.  For Jak, someone like Hayden Christensen or the guy who is playing the new young Captain Kirk.  I do realize they need to be mid teens but hey that hasn't stopped hollywood before.  Krysty NEEDS to me Megan Fox!!  Not too sure about J.B. it has to be someone that melds well with Hugh.. maybe someone like Viggo Mortensen and Mildred, hmm mid 30's, black and good build and looks like they could have an edge... not too sure about that one.  I do realize you have to pu some new faces into the mix or you would have a hell of a cast budget.. Dean needs to be a early teen actor.. and doc needs to be tall and skinny, not sure Hopkins would be a good match.
Thats just my 2 cents on this, lets see what people think...

I always think Ryan looks like a young Bob Dylan

    bob d

Especially on the cover of Pony soldiers and Northstar Rising, just remove one of the lens from his sunglasses in the above picture and add a scar.

With the right budget, say "100 mil"?...We're lookin at 2 A listers and a halfass director....What book?....What characters?......I like Gerard Butler as Ryan,Bruce Willis as Trader and Guy Ritchie to direct.....The rest of the gang depends on the coin left.

I remember staying up late one night to watch the Deathlands movie on Sky one night and remember being hugely dissapointed too. No Doc ? Jack fancying Krysty ? Come on.

OK my own choices for Ryan would have to be Christian Bale - see picture below

    http://www2.netdoor.com/~rainhawk/pensive/bale-christian/bale-christian-46-02.jpg

And JB I would have to plump for Michael Shanks as long as he kept his glasses on.

    http://www.unificationfrance.com/IMG/jpg/24_heures_chrono_michaels_shanks_2b.jpg

How about Sanaa Lathan as Mildred - AVP.

Worst choices would have to be Paris Hilton as Krysty, and Emimen as Jack !!

    Excellent choices all my friend.

Yeah you are right Anthony Hopkins probably is not a great choice for Doc.I love Megan Fox,but Kristy is in her mid thirties and Megan is just in her early twenties.

Gerard Butler would be great for Ryan, but if you are calling Zach Snyder a half ass director after how great 300 did at the box office, the success of Watch Men and the Dawn of the Dead remake, then I think you are just a little off on what a good director is.I apologize if I misinterpreted you.I did state in my forum that I an asking for opinions on what book it should be based on,suggesting Pilgramage from Hell.

I would hope they go with the current group as it now stands. I would like new not just redo the early books. Hugh certainly could play Ryan perfectly considering how he can switch easily between demanding boss and understanding sensitive humanbeing. I like the idea of Jessica Biel she also is able to switch. I also liked the tough woman character she played in Stealth. Although I hate the idea of her with orange hair..... A Deathlands movie without Jak Lauren would be an absolute tragedy : ) I was also thinking Vanessa Blue for the role of Mildred ; P

Guy Ritchie? But Zach Snyder is half assed?

Every film Zach has done has scored at the box office and all were big budget.Guy ritchie makes the same film with a low budget over and over:Lock stock and 2 Barrels,Snatch,Rock n rolla,Etc.......
And not one of his films even came close to grossing the kind of money Zach Syder films do,Like 300!!! Dawn of the Dead, and Watch Men!

Wait a minute......did I say anything about Zach Snyder?.......Ahhhh NO!!!!......Why do you gotta shit on my opinion of who should direct a Death Lands movie?......The movies you mentioned that Guy Ritchie directed are "guy" movies....seems to me that is who should direct a movie about "guy" books.....but thats just opinion

This may be a stretch but I think that Christopher Walken could nail Doc. He's crazy and humorous enough to pull it off.

And, yeah, I can see Bruce Willis as Trader.

Of course the movie sucked but, contrary to popular opinion, I think that Traci Lords nailed Krysty's character bigtime! Watch it again, she has all of the nuances down.

Vincent Spano? Ok, but not great. JB's character was kind of there but not in spirit. Jak's character ruined the whole movie. He wasn't even a whimpy version of the "real" Jak.

Plus, I think that they could have found a better story line than Homeward Bound to film.

I apologize man,I don't mean to shit on your opinion bro,I actually have seen every Guy Ritchie movie and am a big fan.I agree that  it should be a "guy"movie, but I can't think of  any movie that qualifies more than "300"as a "guy"movie.I'm sure That Bryan Singer "Xmen""Superman Returns" Valkyrie" could be a good choice as well as Guy Ritchie or Zach Snyder?

I agree with you on almost every point but one.Bruce Willis as Trader?Great!!!Christopher Walken is my Favorite actor period,so yeah he would be great as Doc or even a villian.I also think you are right about the fact that they could have used a better storyline than "Homeward Bound".You are dead on about Jak's character being played the worst.I do think JB's character was slightly correct but still a douchebag. My only disagreement w/you is about Vincent Spano,He too is a huge DoucheBag.

To add my two pennies worth to this:

Kirtwood Smith (Clarence J. Boddicker in Robocop) as J.B Dix.

Bottom line here is - you don't need big time Hollywood actors to have a great Deathlands movie made.

That's been proven time and again by Pixar.

If you can find a dedicated director, along with a solid screen writer who knows the series, and decent actors to do the job, then you have a surefire 300 Hollywood blockbuster on your hands.

If made correctly, Deathlands would be like the last Terminator film. Dark. Gritty. And damn cool...

Very true!Hugh Jackman proves your point as he kicked ass as Wolverine as an unknown back in 2000' with Bryan Singer as director.I do think that Christian Bale's status as a huge actor sure did not hurt the success of the new Terminator film that you mentioned though?
Oh yeah,If a Death Lands was made in that style"Dark,Gritty, like the New Terminator,it would indeed kick serious ass and maybe be my new fav film over 300!

    Good freakin idea!

Hell even an animated deathlands or a deathlands comic book is better than a badly done movie or just reading and never getting to see anything or hear anything(although it is very fun to Visualize in my head all of the descriptions and imagine myself what is going on)

you would think someone could do a credible job..i too stayed up to watch the movie and was horribly disguested....with all the Final fantasy and Doom I am legend and other end of the world movies out today doing ok..i think it could be a good time to bring this out...only issue is that reguardless of our interest...it has not reached the mainsteam yet - pretty much anyone i talk to about Sci-Fi stuff hasn't heard of DL or OL unless i bring it out....

i alos like Kurt Russle playing the Snake Pliskin angle as Ryan..could work...i'm still jacked up about Jessica Biel as Krysty...damm that would work! I can see Bruce willis as Trader..but i think we need someone even older and more haggard...

But sadly Kurt is a bit too old now I think to play Ryan(he would have been perfect)
As far as Jessica Biel man?(hold on I have to clean up my drool and put my toungue back in my mouth)Where was I?Oh yeah,Jessica Biel would be great as Krysty(oh shit, there goes the toungue and drool again)

Since we are dreaming I would like Sam Elliot to play JB Dix who is my fav character in the books. Although Sam may be a mite too tall for JB he has the right rangy build and is certainly crusty enough. Now for Krysty I was hoping for Tricia Helfer with a dye job. For Ryan I would like either Aaron Tippin or Trace Adkins. Kris Kristoferson for Trader would be awsome he was great in the Blade movies. Queen Latifa for Mildred?

Yeah I was talking the singer. He is tall and quite built - used to be a long haul trucker before singing. He has done some low budget Lifetime cowboy "movies" lately. Queen Latifa was more a half-hearted joke as I could not think of a curvaceous black woman to play Mildred. Gabrielle Union would be a better choice but I do not think she has the curves for Mildred. Maybe some creative coustume fitting would solve the lack of curves. I always pictured Mildred with more of a Puerto Rican/Brazilian ghetto booty. Maybe we could wish for a Brazilian ex-model to play Mildred.

Yeah I agree that ol'Kris Kristoferson was awesome as Whistler in the Blade flicks!(would be a perfect Trader!)

I think that Sam Elliot would make a better Trader than a JB Dix as he is a bit too old for JB?(IMO)

Gabrielle Union is so incredibly hot that she gets my vote for Mildred!!!I think she has more of the kind of curves I like than Mildreds character has!LOL!

And now even more so I think he would play a 1st class trader

Jim I have to say I agree with you on all 3 counts.Kerry Washington.OMG yes I think she has curves to spare!Raven Simone?Equally gorgeous and a great choice as well.
Harry Dean Stanton?I loved him in "Red Dawn" and I remember him from Alien as well.He would make an outstanding Trader as well as Kris K. or Sam E.!!!

I would not have any problem with the other actors or actresses but I still think Gabrielle Union is effing hot!! Reminds me of the days when the Army was mostly concerned with SAmerica. I was posted to Rodman, Panama with the 193rd where I also attended jungle school after I went to the SOA - ladies like Gabrielle Union were all over the place. How about Brazilian hotties like Viviane Castro or Dani Sperle for Mildred?

Bro,you don't have to sell me on Gabrielle Union or South American women.I have been a musician and played in bands since I was 18(36 now)I have toured and released an album worldwide. My point is I have met more than a few ladies on the road and unfotrunatley the kind of music I play seems to attract mostly "white"girls.I myself (after marrying a native American/white woman)am seriouly hooked on latina's and hot ass African American women.I have had the privelage of dating only one of each and I am hooked on the exotic types you mentioned.I know we are way off topic man, just wanted to say yes,you are right!Gabrielle Union is Effing hot!!!

Some exotic woman for Mildred would be nice. it has been a while since I read the beginning of the series (probably should some day) and I can not remember which book Dean makes his appearance. Who would play Dean? Please no Harry Potter wanna-bees!! I always like Dean and was sorry to see his departure. Never cared much for Jack as a character but I guess somebody could play him with enough make up. My wife is Mexican-American (born in E LA) so I am hooked on exotic women particularly from SA, Brazil and Argentina.

"Seedling" is Dean's first apperance bro.Hahah.Great minds think alike huh man?Dark eyes, dark hair, and  dark skin! Yeah,my ex wife ruined me on blondes forever!I am obsessed with Latina's and Native American women cause of her.Blonde's do nothing for me and I am a tattooed Rock n/Roller type with light brown hair and blue eyes(German Descent)so I only attract "white chics"for the most part.I envy you my friend!!!
Back on topic:You really don't like Jak all that much?He is my next Fav character next to Ryan.I agree that Dean was a cool character,I quit reading the books when my dad commited suicide(he is the one who got me into them)so I completely missed what went down with Dean.
If not too personal a question man how old are you?You listed alot of action you have seen so I am figuring you to be at least as old as I am?(36)No offense intended man, just curious?

No never did care for Jak - too much Man-Friday for me. My fav character is JB with whom I have many things in common. I have a AA in Gun Smithing and may someday put my shingle up. I am blind as the proverbial shite-house bat without my glasses, and favor short-range weapons such as pump shotguns and SMGs although I am no slouch at range either. I just prefer to get close and hose the enemy so there is no doubt that he has been removed from the gene pool. Sorry to hear about your father. BTW I am 42, and have brown eyes and hair with a few SF & Airborn tats plus the names of my children and memorium to my best friend KIA in Iraq '04.

Joshua John Miller would (in my opinion) have made a good Dean but he's a little too old for the part now. Then again he may make a good Ryan now ?

    HERE

JJM played "Homer" in the 1987 film "Near Dark".

Check out his older pictures at IMDB (above) and see what I mean about Ryan.

Thanks for the info bro.I figured you were a little older cause of all the action you have seen.I am very impressed.I have nothing in my right eye(totally blind) and once wore a patch(haha)so Thats why I am such a Ryan Cawdor fan.I am also very sorry about your friend who was KIA in Iraq! Thanks for saying that about my dad by the way.If it is not too personal what was your buddies name?I am not real religious but I would like to honor him next time I pray.I don't wanna sound like an ass kiss but I have minor combat exp so compared to you guy's I am honored to know you.I could not hack the extra 3 months of airbourne(Ranger School) like you,or any SF shit bro!(is it still 3 mons. or longer?)
I get it about JB being your man.I think of myself as a bit of a JB Dix as I like to think I know a little about guns.I agree with wanting good CQB weapons.I have little exp. with my mossberg but have used a Mac 10 in .45 cal.I would want the new HK UMP .45 if doing room clearing.

Jim,i will Definetly check that guy you listed out. Thanks for the info too my Brit friend.

Pat was his name - he was my best friend and did not have to drive the day that killed him and injured me and the kid above us in the .50 cal pit. He volunteered to drive that day to be with me as we were real close. The guy that would have been driving that day later commited suicide because he felt so bad about it. You can not beat a good pump action shotgun for CQB esp with a short barrel (mine is 14") which is a NFA weap other than Fed issue. Feed it good buck 00 or better and at least 1 oz slugs. Saw many a bad ass Mujahideen run when he heard the pump action. He knew it would send him to Allah now!! The Benelli was a good shot gun too but will not cycle non-lethal ammo reliably. SInce we do not allways want to kill the Mujahideen we went back to the pump Mossburgs & Remingtons.

Man I can't tell you how sorry I am.My best friend Marv went and fought in Iraq in 91,comes home without a scratch, then gets himself shot over a woman by pointing an empy .40 cal.S&W at the cops. They shot him in the shoulder with a .40 cal hydrashok rd from a Sig P226.He has been paralyzed from the chest down since 1998.
I really feel for your loss and I am cracking a beer now for Pat and Marv, and your driver who killed himself too.(as well as saying a prayer later)
I will take your advice about the 12 gauge for CQB.I already prefer OO buck and 3 inch slugs so thanks alot man.
I am wanting to get the Mossberg 500 with a fixed stock.I have the Persuader with a pistol grip.

no the M4 Benelli is not made for very light rounds..wasn't a requirement when it was designed... (i'm not telling how i know - so a i can see a pump being better in those situations for rubber bullets or bean bags...

sorry about your loss...i can't even imagine how that must feel, and for the other guy to commit suicide over it makes it even worse...trully saddened by your loss bud...

Why do i see James Alexander (George from Seinfeld) as J.B.? I know he isn't a hard-ass type of guy but i see him in the fedora and the glasses of course...but minus a few pounds.... I see Christian Bale as Trader with no hair maybe....

I believe I am the one that mentioned Sam Elliot. I think Christian Bale is too much a Prima Donna and his salary would be too much for this movie. Work on your Portuguese and take the music on the road for a Latin America tour and you would be surprised. Those Brazilias love skinny white boys with tattoos that can Puerto. Quite a few of the girls in the termas speak either Spanish as well as English and Portuguese. Hopefully if this movie comes out it will be worth seeing. Only reason I saw the one from SciFi channel is I had cable at the time.

Yeah Portuguese is the most common language but if you speak spanish you can get buy. Since I am fluent in Spanish I did alright but my American accent seems to charm the Chicas in the termas!! I grew up on a working potato farm that my dad hired migrant workers who were all from Mexico. So I grew up speaking Spanish in the fields with the workers. When I (and my 2 brothers) got older it came in handy trying to get into the pants of the migrant worker's daughters! I think that is where I picked up my attraction for SA ladies. When my folks sold the farm I joined the Army and went into SF and got assigned to ol Panama partly because I was fluent in Spanish. I was in selection for the Green Berets when the first Gulf War broke out and never tried again as after that the demand for Spanish-speaking Green Berets plummeted but the demand for Middle Eastern languages soared. I just watched the latest Fast & Furious - there is some real eye candy in that movie.

Yeah Michelle Rodriguze is hot! hot! hot! Never got a chance to plow one of the chicas from the farm - did not want to cause tension between my father (Jefe') and the workers. Now other farms were fair game. Still remember the "talk" with my father when he caught me and one of the young ladies behind the barn. Opened my eyes to why & when you should keep it in your pants. Never did get the city life much - too many people too close by - I need room to stretch. Not trying to one up anybody - bet there are some crazy things in the city to do too. Yeah we know all those rumors about bands being a bunch of pervs - got to be some truth to the rumors. Only problem living on post in senior NCO housing is that we share a wall with the neighbors. Found out they can hear us - oops!!!

I could do the sex and rock & roll but pass on the drugs. Never did take to dope and a career in the military has put the damper on ever trying it now. Although those of us that live in pain wish we could use medicinal marijuana but as we are government property we can not. The books surprise me with the lack of dope - I know that a few get mentioned, but I would think there would be more mj floating around. Maybe Gold Eagle does not want to risk getting in trouble with a highly juvenile audenience? I know that certain PG13 and PG movies removed all tobacco products to keep from encouraging kids to smoke & even Bond kicked the butt!! JB likes a good stogie (so do I when I can afford them - damn I miss living in Panama - Cuban cigars were as common as Marlboros) although if we are shooting for a PG13 rating might not be able to get tobacco in the script. The tweenies and slightly older kids are what is keeping movie theaters alive - old geezers like me will just wait until the DVD comes out. Although the DL books are not as pervy as some of the other post-apocalyptic stuff out there, they might have to tame down some of the other stuff to get it past the ratings.

By no means was I trying to say drugs were good buddy.Like I said,it nearly killed me.I managed to stay clean until age 25 then I let my asshole singer say"go on pussy,do a line"and i finally caved.Ten years later(haha)I am sober now man.I never liked pot.But after getting injured I became addicted to PainKillers,I think that is pretty common with some vets too.I admire you that you have never done dope bro.More power to you.

Yeah some injured vets can really get addicted - I was not thinking you were saying pot is good - personally I have no issue if someone wants smoke some herb - each to thier own poison. I am a severe type A personality with a strong dislike of any weakness (as I view them) in myself. I have a buddy from a sister platoon that took a round through the left plexus nerve cluster rendering his left arm useless. He is in constant pain and is hooked on pain killers. When the docs were putting me together I got chewed out because I am so adament against drugs and my fear of becomming an addict I was not taking my pain medicine. With all the pharms out there putting billions of pills out you would think there would be a mother-lode of dope someone could sell. I remember Trader used to deal in some medicine - maybe Ryan and co can hit a lode of pain killers to trade.

I feel for you bro it is a rough spot to be in - cant stand the pain and cant stand the dope but need the dope to kill the pain enough to live. As another person that lives in some pain due to injuries I feel for you and wish you the best. I believe that someone has the right to look for the best solution to their pain. If that includes a little (or a lot) medicinal herb to cut back on the pain and opiates - than so be it. My mother in law has lupus and she makes her special "herbal" tea that we have to make sure no body gets into. When we visit in LA we have to make sure grandma's tea is well marked. Of course watching my mother-in-law and wife (wife is in the early stages of lupus) get basted was hysterical!

I actually love to teach - and have studied knife fighting in Krav Maga and karate. One of my favorite tours of duty was teaching Ranger school hand to hand combat. We are one of the few SF units other than the Commandos and Delta that teach hand to hand to all soldiers. I can't carry a tune in a bucket and never had much luck with instruments. I am very ecletic in my music and although I listen to mostly country, I love heavy metal. Metallica is one of my favorite as well as SOAD. When you spend 15 months in the desert it seems that no matter how many gigs of music is loaded on your MP3 you are going to crave new music. In our Stryker (and our CSV before) we hot wired the interior communication system to either a CD or MP3 player to play music while we roll along. Although about the only thing I can not listen to is rap, I have listened to alot of black music as the black brothers get to play thier music as well. After a while we listened to anything that was new. I am always open to new music. I bet if they make a new DL movie it will probably be set to heavy metal or hard rock.

Good taste in music too bro.Metallica is the reason I had long hair from age 14 to age 27 and the first cassete I ever bought was Metallica "Master Of Puppets"in 1986!I think you mean S.O.D.(Storm Troopers of Death)?

Well I can always teach you how to use the Nuinchukas instead of the guitar.lol!!!I have some good new's man. That SA tour you said I need to do may just actually become a reality!I have been in e-mail contact with the owner and pres.of my old record label(Leviathan)and he says if I get a new vocalist(he loves music which I write 100%,but hates the singer)He will be interested in signing my band America's Nightmare to a full worldwide recording/promo/and distribution deal!(that name is not anti-USA in any way bro,it is just a play on how the American Dream goes wrong alot is all)
BTW NHDoucette, those are all excellent picks for the movie.

I grew up on Willy & the Stones. My dad listens to old country and my momma listens to rock.In high school I listened to Dio, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, and really liked the Ramones and some punk like the Circle Jerks. First album I bought was Aerosmith Toys in the Attic on 8 track!! SOAD is for System of a Down - one of my kids in my 3rd squad is a SOAD freak and we listen to quite a bit of their music when his turn is up to load the MP3/CD player. A lot of the termas play a lot of American heavy metal - last time I was down in Ipanema (my uncle has a friend owns a condo there) they were still playing American grunge too!! It is a rough place to be and want to remain faithful - thank god I was still single then!!

Ozzie will always be one of my favorite musicians. It was awsome seeing him at Ozfest. Talk about the poster child for why you do not do hard drugs. While I bet a movie such as we are discussing will have some kind of rock music score, one of the best things about the latest mediocre Iron Man movie was the Black Sabbath song, of course "Iron Man."

I thaught IM was OK - but since I have been reading it since IM looked like a gray walking pot-bellied stove, maybe I was expecting too much. I still have some of my old Magalogs that featured IM in some of his earliest incarnations. I do not think there was really any other song more fitting than that when he comes out of the cave. Another turkey of a movie was the Dukes of Hazard remake. Only good things were Jessica Simpson' ass, the General Lee, and the music which was mostly old AC/DC.

I am not sure about it being dead - but maybe we flogged this dead equine already?

Your picks were great - Ms Fox is hot!!!

I would still rather see some crusty old dude like Sam Elliot play JB rather than somebody like Bruce Willis.

I shall don my asbestos underwear but do not mind getting reminded that some people do not read all the previous posts. Would be nice if someone did read all the previous posts in every thread - might ease some misconceptions.

Not sure if we even have a chance of seeing another one of these even on the SciFi channel or direct to DVD.

I understand the last one did not do so well, and doubt that SciFi channel would want to invest in another likely low-return show when they are looking for a replacement to BSG which was hugely popular.

Despite our enjoyment of the various DL books, they are not huge sellers with large (enough) following unlike Nora Roberts, Stephen King, James Patterson, etc.

I admit as an American I find English humor either very funny (Red Dwarf, Shaun of the Dead) or very droll.

For me the BBC has either very good shows (Island at War) or stuff that I would rather not see.

I do however like a lot of English documentaries and some sit coms and wish we (the States) would get more episodes of Island at War, Foyle's War, and Jonathan Creek. Season 5 of Foyle's War finally hit our shores while season 6 is out in the UK and season 7 is filming.

By and large I have been finding British SF genre TV to be outstanding as of late with shows like Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Primeval. With the exception of BSG nothing comes close.

The latest Torchwood series was great up until the ending, where it felt like Russel T. Davies was just breaking all of his toys out of spite before handing over the production to Steven Moffat. On the upside, Moffat pretty much gets a clean slate to work with, and he has proven with stories like "Blink", "The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances", "The Girl in the Fireplace", and "Silence in the Library / The Forest of the Dead" that he gets the Doctor Who universe far better than any other writer out there today.

"Americans can't understand British humor, therefore you must be an American" is an argument with a faulty opening premise and is equivalent to:  if your teeth are a trainwreck and your complexion like an unbaked pepperoni pizza, you must be English.

*sigh* C'mon people, can't we all get along?

Yeah, I know, quit being a hypocrite (spelling?), since I've been known to be less than pleasant at times, but now that we've gotten rid of (hopefully for good) the latest piece of crap who kept coming back time and again, shouldn't we just concentrate on being civil to one another and just get along?

The constant arguing and fighting does really get tiresome, and I hope that those who are involved feel the same way.

    Did I argue? Nope.

Was I aiming my original comment at Alan ? Again Nope.

I have not caught many of the Doctor Who maybe I will check it out with a new writer. Have not caught any Torchwood or Primeval episodes yet although both look interesting. Unless AFRTS starts to show them I might get the discs from Netflix when I get around to it. I have been watching the first three seasons of Burn Notice right now and have been enjoying them so far.

I was prepared to hate the new BSG especially with Starbuck as a woman - but was quite suprised and enjoyed the series. I was 11 when the original series was on TV and loved them as a kid.

I mentioned that I would vote for Tricia Helfer with a dye job to play Kristie in a new DL movie although to do her hair right might have to go CGI.

You say you enjoyed the original BSG series back when you were 11 in 1978.

You also stated in a previous post that you took part in the invasion of Grenada in Oct-Dec 1983.

This would make you 17 when you took part in the Grenada operation -yes ?

    Do the math.

    1983 - 1978 = 6 years (age 11 in 1978 plus 6 years = 17)

Since when did the Army start sending kids into battle ? You have to be age 18 to enter a combat zone ?

    Hmmm...

Yep turned 12 in August 1978, so you are correct I misspoke and was actually 12 when the series hit the TV in my area, in September or so.

Turned 17 in August of '83 (in my recruiter's car on the way to the Gray Hound station), invasion was in October of '83. Not sure about the age of entry into combat (ask Mike), but yes I was 17 in Grenada. I was fresh from 'boot and it was my first deployment.

I was still a green infantry recruit fresh from AIT. I do not believe the Army was expecting any serious resistance, but I spent most the time humping shells for the M102s at the airport and dodging craters in the runway the engineers blew.

Most of the fighting was done by the 82nd and 75th Rangers, although much like Somalia I hear rumors there were SEALs there, but I did not see any. Did not do much in Grenada because I came in with the later bunch as the (rumored) SF guys were leaving. We had a whole company of Cubans nearby that kept us entertained.

Funny it was Grenada that got me interested in other fields in the Army.

I'll tell you what dude, let's make a deal, don't provoke or invoke me and you can spin your tales until you're blue in the face.

If anyone out there want to believe you that's their business. The majority of the crowd who did are mostly gone anyway. The rest of us aren't convinced or impressed, so knock yourself out.

(Incidentally, it's slightly more than a rumor that the Navy SEALS were in Grenada.

Team Six rather famously performed the rescue of Governor Sir Paul Scoon and tragically lost four members during a night water jump.

This was dramatized on the outstanding TLC series Navy SEALs: The Untold Stories narrated by Peter Coyote.  This is rerun often and available on DVD in the bargain section of most Wal-Marts.

But I would imagine a seasoned operator such as yourself would know all that.)

If you actually want me to keep pointing out holes in your stories, I'll be glad to do that as well.  It's entirely up to you LOL!

I never caught the TLC series - but thanks for the info. I said "I never saw any" but guess you missed that.

Mike, I was merely referring to your Army expertise although you have never served a day or walked in my boots. I can read Wernher Magnus Maximilian Freiherr von Braun’s biography and talk to his descendents and relatives – does not make me a rocket scientist.

As for me "telling" my tales I was asked point-blank. Do not like the answer? Do not ask the questions that are likely to displease you.

Of course you believe everything you read or see on TV?

Prior to 1994-ish there was little if poor cooperation between the forces, as proven quite well in Somalia. The four services had grown apart and used very different comms equip and it was in later years that quite a bit of effort was put in to cohesive deployment.

You have not poked any holes but merely showed your bias – and have misconstrued or ignored my posts to suit your desires. Mike you have put your uncle and others in your family on such a high pedestal that any one else could never hope to compare. I hope you get some enjoyment out of attacking someone you do not know from Adam.

I visit this site to discuss some interesting books and ideas not get attacked and belittled for every post I make (remember the Zed comment?). While I can afford the minutes on the Crackberry while I am on post, it is getting tedious and there is no merit arguing with someone on the 'net.

LOL! Every post you make furthers my point. I have no desire to waste one more second of time on you Audie, but if you want to continue to drag me into it, I'll be glad to "attack and belittle" you further.

I've said my piece. Don't drop my name and you can "Commander McBragg" yourself to the "Cool-guys" until the camouflage cows come home.

Feel free to continue to drop as many acronyms, buzzwords, and military catch phrases as you want and let the folks here decide for themselves.

I'm convinced you are not authentic and disservice every person who has served this country, but at this point I'll gladly leave you alone to your own devices if you don't try and provoke me.

Or give me some proof and I'll damn well spit shine your combat boots from here to eternity...or admit you are "just kidding" and we'll all have a good old belly laugh over a cold Pabst Blue Ribbon...

(Now if you'll excuse me I have to go put away my Offical Austin Powers Fake Chest-Hair Wig...)

    Well now thats all done,
I hate to disagree with the guy who started this thread and the others who all say Hugh Jackman for Ryan, but Hugh is simply too short!
Ryan is supposed to stand 6'2".
Otherwise Hugh would have been fantastic.
The boy who plays Lucius Malfoy (white hair) would be great as Jak.
    Rebecka Rominjn for Kristy.
Perhaps Gerard Butler for Ryan? (he is tall enough)
I love Vivica A fox for Mildred.
    Doceter Fonda or Donal Sutherland?
    Trader:Scott Glenn
J.B. Dix:any skinny short guy w/glasses who can act?
Dean:The werefolf kid Jacob Black  from Twilight?

If only a movie was made 5/10 years ago.

A Indiana Jones Harrison Ford would have been perfect for JB, Fedora hat and all

Not to mention Clint Eastwood chomping a cigar as The Trader!

The problem lies in how do you make all these books a movie series/tv series?

Where do you start? Wheres the intro?

5- minutes to setup the backround of the holocaust, what happened at skydark, how north america changed and current conditions..

Then do you get straight to mcCandess(forgot how to spell his name) and his excursion into the Darks or Scale and his gang eying Traders massive convoy.

One qualm I disliked about the books was that we got so little of Traders life and how he built his war wags and the missions he went on etc while bringing some kindness to people who needed it and chilling the slaggers who needed that..

theres so many different directions one could take this.

If done properly it could actually be a pretty massive hit in the mainstream.....but it must be done properly, and not like that 2003 movie.

Trader was written as an Enigma, someone who Ryan aspired to be. He chose to keep his past a secret revealing only what he wanted people to know but making it so fantastic you never knew if he was telling the truth or telling some sor tor elaborate tale.
Even his original disapearance was shrouded in mystery, was he ill, did he choose to disappear? Who knows.

I once asked Lawrence if Trader was maybe some sort of military freezie, as he knew so much about the location of redoubts and all sorts of tech. Again -like trader, Lawrence just told me "...who knows, maybe one day we will find out. But would you believe him if he said he was..."

I know, and thats EXACTLY why it bothered me so much, because my curiosity was massivly peaked.

Trader remained my favourite character due to that shrouded mystery surrounding him.

The idea of him being a military Freezie is a good one, but I like the thought of him being in his late teens with his friend marsh and running from cannies or w.e, stumbling into a stockpile....and slowly uncovering secrets and knowledge about the predark world, growing from what he was conditioned(getting as much jack as possible and trading weapons) into more of a robin hood type character so to speak...thus beginning the legend of THE trader, and not just any trader.  He was a hardass, but a hardass who was fair when warrented, and not geedy and lusting for power like all the others.

Maybe Marsh folsom was the freezie instead?  didnt he know all about computers, reading, writing, how to use lat/long and UTM on maps? ...just a thought

I agree 100% that the Trader is the most interesting character  equal to Ryan alone.
I think this thread says at the beginning that it needs to be done way better than the 2003 movie as you state.

Clint Eastwood would have been perfect as the trader (like he was in Unforgiven)
But I think Harrison Ford is not nerdy enough for JB.lol.

My guess is that in LJ's eyes he saw Trader as being Harry Dean Stanton -his favorite actor.

I have seen him in many movies, but only one role comes to mind offhand.
I remember a rather dramatic "Avenge Me Boys,Avenge Me!" in the movie: "Red Dawn".
He was in a Russian concentration camp during their occupation in Colorado.

Now that you mention it I remember him very well as "Brain" in Escape from New York (my fav John Carpenter film/Kirk Russell role)
I also remember him in "Alien".
Like I said,at the time the only role I could recall was the one in "Red Dawn".
I did not imply that he did not play numerous other roles.
I am aware he has an extensive career.
    Thanks for the link,
    I am going there now.

I think Harrison Ford playing a Indiana Jones like character wouldnt be too nerdy for Jb...remember in the Holy Grail, where it showed him in the classroom with glasses and him ranting on antiquity and how X never ever marks the spot?

    That would be perfect imho.

Just replace the whip with his shotgun, ad upgrade the revolver to a Uzi

But this discussion is moot, as he's surely too old now.

Quick question, wasnt there a animated deathlands clip somewhere online some years ago?  I completly forgot what it was called, but it was less then a minute long...showed someone riding a wag at ryan on a clif edge, and ryan and krysty shooting it or something.

This was really ancient though, I was only entering my teens when I first saw it.

I meant Harrison ford was too masculine and too large/tall of a man to play JB as JB is supossed to be short and skinny/scrawny.

You have a good point though,Harrison did look bookwormish and nerdy as a professor teaching in the Indiana Jones movie.

I love Harrison Ford as an actor. personally.
I just think he is too old now, as I think someone else already said.
Jb is supposed to be 35/37 correct?
