Teaser:

Deathlands is a living hell, but there is someplace worse: a parallel Earth where the atomic mega-cull never happened. Now, this otherworld Earth is in its final death throes. Yet, for an elite few, the reality portal offers a new frontier of raw energy, and expendable slaves -- a bastion of power for Dredda Otis Trask. Her invasion force has turned the ruins of Salt Lake City into the deadly mining grounds of a grotesque new order -- one that lies in wait for Ryan and his companions.

In the Deathlands, danger lurks beyond the imagination.

Back Cover:

Merciless Interdiction

More than a century after a multi-warhead nuclear strike wiped out nearly all of earth's population, humanity's feral instinct to survive has spawned a savage new America. Here, the brutality of man and nature conspire against hope. Yet despite its chaos and bloody turmoil, Deathlands is a second chance for the human race...and for a group of warrior survivalists lead by a man called Ryan Cawdor.

Finished # 57 Breakthrough 12/2003
by GuapoPogi
Once again Jak is not a mutie. Why do these new authors feel the need to declare Jak a mutie? I had a major problem with the complete loss of continuity here. But it was an otherwise good book, although to me this book like its predecessor Shadow World really doesn't fit into the Deathlands universes. I give it a 5.

Deathlands at its best!!
by pigeonxman
Breakthrough is a great instalment in the series...Slake City is a hellhole and the companions find themselves there as usual. I thought it was different and exciting. Zero City was one of the best i think and Breakthrough isnt far behind...great story...and holy cow! Dean wasnt taken prisoner in the first 20 pages as in every other book hes in!

I can't be bothered reading the rest of this book.

I agree with a statement made by GuapoPogi in his/her review: this story doesn't fit into the Deathlands universe.

Here in Queensland, Australia it is hard to get a hold of Deathlands books but when I get one of these later ones I sure appreciate the earlier books a whole lot more.

Slow Start
by cathboy
I ahve just finished this book, of the series this was the hardest for me to finish. I enjoyed the encounter with the ville and the doomie, and the last third of the book. The middle portion slowed down for me. The best part of this book was that for the first time you felt maybe one of the crew would not come out alive here. The odds were high that Dredda and here crew would get at least one of the gang. The part I liked least was the continual reference to Jak as the mutie. If memory serves me right Jak is a true albino and is commonly mistaking for a mutant, but is not. Overall a good read, and it leaves open the possibility of another encounter with our friends from the alternate realities. I will be glad though to get back to the less high tech adventure.

BREAKTHROUGH IS JUST THAT - A BREAKTHROUGH!!
by One Eye Chills
Alan has given us an even bigger and badder novel in his continuation of SHADOW WORLD.
Breakthrough was just that - pitting Ryan and his companions to the worst and most formadable enemy to date I think.
The weapons and machinery were awesome in scope and very interesting to read. I kept saying to myself - How are they gonna get outta this?
And thats a good thing!
The usual formula was broken in this installment - but in a great way in my opinion!
Keep it up Alan! You're truly an asset to this series.

Break on through to the other side!
by The Phantom
This is the sequel to Shadow World, written by the same author. The alternate Earth forces have now invaded Deathlands, and have set up camp in the nuked out remains of the Salt Lake City area. This book again shows the superior technology in the weapons and armor, as one of the five corporate leaders of shadow earth, Dredda Trask, commands a unit set to take over Deathlands, and eventually the world.
Another terrific story, this adventure is set in a bleak environment of glass, Ryan and his gang are in a large group of slaves mining ore for Trask’s futuristic technology to continue to function. The companions are up against a power unlike any they have seen before, and the ingenuity and determination of the group is tested to the limits to not only extricate themselves from this horrible situation, but to turn the tide against their oppressors is an amazing series of events to read.
Full of action, suspense and gritty adventure, this is a great continuation in the Shadow World trilogy, with Doom Helix being the third book published several years later. Highly recommended book for any fan of this series that has not read it yet, these Shadow World books are among the very best.
