Kane, like his father and grandfather decided to go into the service of the Barony. From a young age he started training to be the judge, jury and quite often, executioner for Baron Cobalt. He served faithfully for years, despite that sometimes what he was told to do didn't sit well with him. As of the beginnings of Outlanders he had been a magistrate for sixteen years.

During his time as a Magistrate he was trained in Martial arts, and to be proficient in the use of many weapons, as well as the Sin Eater sub gun. He is a proficient pilot and has flown the Deathbirds in many missions into the outlands.

He is the consummate warrior. Even in exile he is a magistrate first, a man second. Though he knows that he shares a special bond with Brigid Baptist, Grant and even Salvo. One that spans not only their current lives, but throughout history. He learns of this in a bad jump during a mission to Russia (Destiny Run). Despite this Kane has a wry sense of Humour and is very protective of his friends, especially Brigid and Grant.

When it comes to Brigid he is willing to throw everything away to protect her. And he did (See below)

In a mission to deliver a termination warrant to a man named Milton Reeth he discovered a mat trans. There had been rumours about the hidden gateways for years since the program of unification began, but they were considered to be nothing more than myths. Before Salvo killed the man, Kane picked up a disk that had been used to download data from the redoubts computer system.

That disk would change his life forever. He took it to a young Archivist he had seen named Brigid Baptise. She unlocked the code and learned what was on the disk, jeopardising her life. After Salvo took her and was about to execute her for being a preservationist Kane threw his career away by rescuing her and taking her, Grant and himself deep into the Outlands. They head to the gateway located in Milton Reeth's fortress. They then join Lakesh in the Cerberus redoubt.

Here he meets the Archon Balam. His initial reaction is one of great fear and loathing, and the wish to kill the inhuman creature. He is treated to Balam's special message that he constantly broadcasts telepathically. Kane had seen the face of the enemy and at that time knew exactly where his destiny lay. The eventual overthrow of the Archons and the Baronies.

In Omega Path he was shocked, but not really surprised to learn that he and Salvo are brothers. It was due to the genetic manipulation by the head Archivist Lakesh. He wanted to create powerful and loyal soldiers to help him his private war against the barons. Kane turned out to be everything that Salvo wasn't. Salvo was a failed experiment. Despite the bitterness between the two men Kane was willing to give Salvo a chance to Redeem himself. But a leopard cannot change it's spots and Kane is forced to kill him.

Balam specifically requested the chance to talk to Kane by using Banks (a member of the Cerberus staff). He gave Kane the mission to retrieve all the parts of the Chintamani Stone. He takes Balam with him to Tibet. He is shocked to learn that the Archon can actually talk. By the end of the mission he finds himself no longer hating the Archon, and in some ways pities the creature. He also learned more in a few minutes in physical contact with the Archon than most people had learned in many years of study and constant contact with the creature.

Balam passed on the Vigil of trying to save his own kind (of which he was pretty much the last) to Kane. It's now Kane's time to figure out a way for Humanity to survive and overthrowing the Baronies is the first step.
