Not looking for a tear up with anyone, just wondering on how she was viewed at home and further afield, particularly with our american cousins. Very broadly in the UK, she was hated if you came from north of watford or were in any way connected to the miners. Even tho i'm a jock, she gets a big thumbs up from me.

Well, I'd say I'm in the same camp with Elvis Costello. But that being said, I don't see where my opinion matters much in that it's not my country and not my business.

Is that a quote from US congress 1939...

If you are asking did the US wait too long to get involved in the war, of course we did. But a madman stomping across all the borders of Europe is somewhat different than a duly elected Prime Minister of a foreign nation having different political leanings than my own. I should think you wouldn't care for my poking my nose in on the latter.

Not at all. It was a failed bit of humour that fell foul of the great watery devide between us.

JA.COM now has a good few Brit members and as such on occasion a few topics may pop up under "general chat" that may be founded in the British news etc. If you have no views or interest in the topic then like all other threads just don't reply.

I think our Scottish friend just asked everyone in general to open the topic to all members?

Oh, by all means, chat about it. I have my own opinions on the subject, I just recognize that they are founded entirely on information and experiences so far removed from the actual reality so as to be completely useless.

I would not say useless. It would be good to read the views of those outside of Britain be they good or bad. Mrs T had a huge influence on the future of relations between us and yourselves politics wise.
This could be an interesting thread.

Some interesting comments. Still chortling about the congress line. That tickled me. Part of the reason for posting on this subject was as stated, simply to see the opinions of others, hopefully from a little further afield. Another would be... Without blowing sunshine up anyone's hoop, from a lot of the posts and comments i've read on various threads there would appear to be some witty and sharp characters posting here.

I think I speak for most of us Americans when I say that we know little of her besides her name and the fact she was the PM of England. It's kind of like asking you Brits what you think of Reagan, or Clinton, or even GW Bush . Being a child of the 80s, I remember hearing a lot about her in the news - they called her "The Iron Lady", IIRC - but beyond that... not much.

Thanks for taking the time kerrick. Its fair to say my i dont know much about American politics. Could name all the post war Presidents, a few of the the more famous ones over history, a smattering of secretary's of defence and a handful of failed presidential candidates. A few bullet lines of info and an opinion on each. Start getting into internal policies and i'd struggle. Would it be fair to say that brits/ the rest of world care more about America's leaders/politics than vice versa?? I for one feel more closely linked to the U.S of A (which i've never been to) than Europe (which i've traveled fairly extensively... I can see France when i walk my dogs)

I think it would be fair to say that, yes. The US is one of the dominant world powers, and certainly one of the most influential, economically, militarily, and even socially. I'm not much into politics myself, but I think it's safe to say that other countries keep a close eye on who's in power over here, so that they can better chart their own course.

OTOH, it's also fair to say that people in many countries are better educated about world affairs than Americans. I could name the majority of the world's nations and where they are, but I couldn't name more than a handful of their leaders.

I have to agree with most of what you have said here and its saved me a lot of typing, what I can't agree with is:
Seeing France. I can't see France from where I live!
    Walking dogs. I don't have a dog!

That would be an accurate observation.

I myself despise politics, but having said that I know more about the inner workings of the politics in the US because I give a damn about it as opposed to the majority of Americans that know little or nothing at all about it. They are just too wrapped up in their lives to give a damn, which confuses me because what the government does effects their lives.

Having said that, even I don't pay enough attention or know enough as I should be, and compared to folks in many other countries, Americans in general are so uneducated, uninformed, and worse, misinformed about our government, it just makes me hate politics as a subject matter even more.

Whenever politics is brought up in conversation, more often than not, the level of bullshat and ignorance rises in proportion.
