With the new's off an upcoming new arrival, I began to wonder what old friend's and or allies the author's could bring back or stumble across for a book or two, like Donfil More(?). I quite liked the Convoy Boss from Cannibal Moon.

Donfil makes an appearance in Downrigger Drift. Every other person who has travelled with the companions ended up dying, so the only recurring characters they ever meet are old enemies and Roberto the Trader (from Pollotta's books).

Trader has been the axis of this series. He might as well be Ryan's father. He was looked upon by Ryan as that, in fact.

I would love to see a return of the Trader. And have the best writer of this series have him go out in a blaze of glory.

A proper end for a legend.

I think toward's the end of his second foray with the one eyed gang, ol trader was fast becoming a pain in there ass and it was getting to the point where Ryan was going to have to put him in his place or more likely his grave.
Also i think most of the fans thought he was a bit of a douchebag. However it would be nice to get some closure on whether he was alive or dead.

I like the idea of Ryan and The Trader runnin into each other after all these yrs.But come on Max,The Trader bein the axis of the DLs books is a stretch.True Ryan looked up to The Trader as a Father, but that was yrs ago.DLs is centered around Ryan and his group, and why not?He is the badest fucker walkin around and he runs with some badass ppl.So if someone does write a DLs book with The Trader gettin the better of Ryan,I'll hunt u down and beat u to death with "Red Holocaust"

I mean that the Trader is the axis because Ryan and J. B. always quote 'Traderisms' in just about every book. Also, he is, or was, a HUGE, bigger-than-life character in the series.

I actually kinda hated when he came back as an asshole. It didn't make sense, because Ryan and him got along for a decade in the war wags. I don't mind the writer creating tension betwixt the two, but I would've rather seen them understand each other, and then have Trader save the companions by somehow blowing up an army of muties, while having to blow himself up in the process.

    Or something akin to that...

Read Pilgrimage to Hell again - Trader was an asshole before he left; he just became even more of one after he returned. It was noted several times that he was different - shorter temper, mood swings, short attention span, memory loss... Trader and Ryan knocking heads was bound to happen - in his day, Trader was the king and Ryan was his right hand. After Trader returned, Ryan was running the show, and Trader was still used to being the guy in charge, so it led to conflicts (and also because both men are strong-willed and unwilling to back down when challenged - it's necessary for a leader-type in DL). In the end, Trader did the honorable thing - he sacrificed himself to hold off the muties and brushwooders so Ryan and the others could get away (see the Shadowfall summary on the wiki).

Trader was a larger-than-life figure, a Deathlands legend, and the one who's largely responsible for Deathlands being what it is today* ("today" being "at the present time in the books ), as well as Ryan being who he is, but he's not the axis of the series... more like the foundation on which it's built.

*Not my opinion; this was noted in one of the books. It is arguably true, though... he supplied arms and equipment to villes looking to rebuild, fought against muties/bandits/warlords, helped propagate news and trade, and gave people hope. There are lots of times when the companions run into people who say "Hey, you ran with Trader? He did for us, and we're so grateful!"
