OK, I have to vent a bit here.

After just finishing the first 80 pages of this latest DL, I kinda already feel I've read this same scenario a million times already.

If I read another baron vs baron, I'm gonna throw-up!

For those who have already finished this one - does it get better?

Now, it is not that I am hating this book. I really admire and like Victor Milan and his work for over two decades.

I also like that in this book in particular, Milan is trying to instill that old western-style DL feeling that the original author did so well.

The main bad guy in this one, Snak Eye the bounty hunter, is pretty cool and colorful thus far.

I too feel as if I have read this idea many times before and its getting a bit boring. I had hoped for a chapeter in the next redoubt with Ricky wondering what the hell had happened after his first jump but no not a word, it was like he had done it a hundred times before.
I'm not expecting anything wonderful with this one.

Yeah, you made a HUGE valid point! Ricky seems to've not batted an eyelash at having his molecules broken up and transported away. I guess he's old school, eh? This was a major missed opportunity to create some drama and have the fans get to know this new side character for a bit. I'm curious though. Is Milan going to kill him off in his next upcoming book, or is the next writer going to include him?

A few Niggles I've read so far...

page 54 "... Ryan... ... finished off both with head shots from the sniper long blaster he carried before he got his new handier Styer..."

WTF? is Millan teling us Ryan is carrying his New Scout sniper AND his old one here? Sloppy just sloppy both on the writer and editors part!

page 56 "...J.B ran down Mildreds... ...on his stubby paint pony..."

I'm guessing the auto spell checker didn't know the word "pinto" and replaced it with paint, again sloppy on the part of the editors part.

    Just call me pedantic...

Well, geez, my apologies for missing the gun error. But Jim, the American paint horse has been around as an official horse  breed since the sixties.

Sorry. The "Well, geez" isn't meant to be sarcastic. It's a "geez" to me for missing such a blatant error.

Not a problem, I have known you too long now to think anything bad of you.

I put pinto in to my WP software and it flagged it as a spelling mistake and its first suggestion to correct it was paint !!! My severly limited knowledge of horses just led.me to think it was a typo. My bad on that one.

Yeah, and my eyes glaze over when the writer starts telling us that Mildred was once an olympic shooter, yada, yada, yada for the millionth time.

Well, every new book has got to be someone's first experience with the series, right? I don't mind brief torrents of back story, so long as it's not too long and doesn't detract from the scene at hand.

And while I've got the floor, so to speak, I have to ask which novel the whole "Doc sexing pigs" thing is from. That's just too bizarre to ignore, though I'm sure it was added for a legitimate plot reason, and not just an experiment in exploitation. (I'm fairly new to Gold Eagle, and my collection doesn't have missing pieces so much as it has cavernous black holes, vast expanses of nothingness just waiting to be filled, which is why I don't possess a more encyclopedic knowledge of past novels.)

Found myself skip reading this one beyond page 80 something. It just didn'yt grab me like a couple of the previous ones did, I had hoped for something at the end between snake eye and Ryan but was again left wanting. The much talked of redoubt turned out to be a two paragraph stepping stone to the end of the book with nothing to show for itself other than the Mattrans.

The 100 or so pages I did read at the start and end I would give 5/10 but cant comment on the rest as I only read about a dozen words on each page.

There is actually NO need anymore to have authors retell - all over again for the thousandth time! - the backgrounds of Doc and Mildred, because for a very long time now, each book has the DEATHLANDS LEGEND inside of it. This tells you all one needs to know about each main character.

I would rather have a 1 page character rundown at the beginning of the book, that is not part of the story. It gets OLD fast rereading their back story. Why stand by a convention that was used in the 1920s? Haven't we moved on?
I read the description of Doc Savage's crew how many times? Conan's "volcanic" blue eyes how many times? please stop the madness!

The thing between the pigs and Doc happens in the first book, it is a part of Doc's back story . Doc was forced to service pigs by a  sadistic Baron who got off on watching Doc  and others suffer . I believe it was added to help explain why Doc goes a bit mad at times.

    Not true.
