Crimson Waters

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and dedication alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved, and always will solve, the problems of the human race.

- Calvin Coolidge, 30th president of the United States

The story begins with the companions arriving in a new redoubt. Their arrival has triggered a malfunction, which starts a fire in the gate chamber. They make it out all right, but the gate itself is done for. Unfortunately, they're stuck on an island. Fortunately, it's part of a chain, and the next island isn't far off - a mile or so, and the water is shallow enough to walk.
As they make their way along, they're attacked by mutie piranha, then normal sharks that are drawn by the blood. Ryan shoots a couple sharks to distract the others from the humans, and he and his friends make it to safety.
After traversing several such islands, they eventually find a local with a small boat who's willing to give them passage to the nearest ville. The ville in question is Neuva Tortuga, a pirate stronghold on the island of Nevis. After paying a docking fee, they head to a local tavern to look for passage back to the mainland.
They find a man who they can pump for information, and discover that Puerto Rico (which has at least one known redoubt) isn't far away. It's also referred to as Monster Island by the locals for its profusion of muties.
After they've gotten everything useful from the man, a group of pirates from the Sea Wasps saunter in. One of them thinks Krysty is a gaudy slut and tries to grope her boobs; Ryan, of course, takes offense and cuts the man's hand off with his panga, starting a bar fight. The companions escape, steal a yacht, and flee the island with the Wasps hot on their heels.
By the time they reach Puerto Rico, two of the three boats chasing them have broken off pursuit due to problems. The last one, the pirates' flaghip, makes it to shore. The companions reach the settlement of Nuestra Senora, which has been destroyed by another group and dock, then flee their boat; JB sets some booby traps before they go. The pirates dock not long after and start to board the yacht, but the bomb goes off, blowing up both ships and killing most of the remaining pirates.
They make camp for the night some distance inland. Jak is on patrol and captures a young boy, a local, lurking around the camp. He is Ricardo Morales, or Ricky for short. He used to live in Neustra Senora until the place was attacked and razed by El Guapo, who is trying to take over the island with his army. Ricky's parents were killed and his sister, Yamile, was taken as a slave; he's trying to find and rescue her. Since he knows the island, they decide to bring him along.
The next night, they stop in a small village. The locals there tell them of a great treasure up in the mountains and warn them about the chupacabras. Armed with this knowledge, they continue up into the mountains, but El Guapo and his army aren't far behind. It becomes a race to see who can reach the redoubt first, but the bad guys win.
While the soldiers are inside looting, the companions slip in to create some havoc. Unfortunately, another patrol shows up, and they're all captured - all except for Ricky, who was left behind to guard their backs. Ricky see what happens and goes in after them, rescuing them. A running gunbattle ensues; during the chaos, the main doors (which are on a timer) open, letting all the creatures that have been created in the facility back in. They proceed to kill anyone they find, giving the companions time to flee to the mat-trans. Since they're unwilling to leave Ricky behind, they take him along as they jump out.
