I remember commenting once a long time ago about somehow Doc's LeMat getting converted to modern ammunition, if it was possible, something JB could do, etc.  Well, I wind up being close, as he comes across a 20th reproduction of a LeMat, meant to fire modern day ammo...and....HE CHUCKS HIS ORIGINAL INTO A LAKE.  I'm stunned....been reading this series for 15 years now, I never thought that would happen, that someone would upgrade their gun, but hey, hopefully Doc won't be short on .44 ammo.

spoiler, looks like they have a time line malfunction in the most recent book on par with anything that ever happened in "enterprise"
At one point in "Havens Blight" Doc is holding his .44 lemat above water to keep it dry once again.  Something you do not have to do with modern ammunition.
The conversion would be harder than you would think.  The frame would have to be remachined to operate much like a Welby or Smith & Wesson Scofield.  It would require an open top break to be able to load the shotgun barrel.  The Shotgun on a lemat acts as the point of rotation for the 9 shot .44 cylinder.
I have looked into converting mine into a sleeved .357 with a .410/.45 long colt cylinder insert for the shotgun {to keep it ATF legal}.  .357 due to the extra force of modern ammunition vs black powder.  It can be done, only take an EXCELLENT gun smith, milling machine and about $2500 to $3000...   coolness factor would be almost worth it..

Not read this one yet but  does it state he does it to keep the powder dry or not? If it doesn't could we not say it was latent memory on his part -he has done it that many times in the past he just does it as second nature now?

Hang on, what am I saying here, its a VM book and I know just how much he cares for any sort of continuity from another writers work...
