John Helfer's 3rd entry is his most ambitious yet.
After waiting over 2 years for his new book, Helfer's proves yet again just how solid a Deathlands writer he can be with a different type of action/adventure for the DL companions. Deep beneath the sea. Love this!
The depths of the ocean have been mentioned throughout the years, but never fully explored until now. John Helfer's 3rd book showcases just how much more comfortable he's becoming in this DL universe. Either he is reading what us fans are posting, or he just has a true love himself for this series. And he proves that yet again with mixing past adventures of the original author with his own.
Instead of just penning an adventure with the typical bad baron and the wooden characters going through the motions, Helfers imbues the DL companions with true emotion...towards each other and past friends and newcomers they come across.
Dark Fathoms is a fresh feeling adventure. Never has the oceans been explored in this series to this extent. It makes for a harrowing read at times. Helfers creates a scary atmosphere filled with even scarier creatures and cyborgs that creep out of the watery shadows.
I really love how Helfers pays close attention to the details, both of his own adventure he is writing, but paying serious homage to the original author's work.
John Helfer's is a very talented author, and I feel so lucky to have high caliber writers such as he to be penning this series. I'd love to see how he could do the same with the Outlanders universe.
